Street lighting control systems

The importance of street lighting control systems

The use of street lighting control systems for regulating the luminous flux in public lighting is first and foremost a fundamental concept for reducing energy consumption and not least for reducing light pollution.

Lighting control system to manage the fixtures

The method by which to dim, or to adjust the light level of an installation, depends on many factors. There are more traditional methods up to the more innovative ones. Let’s now discover together all the possible methodologies for an intelligent and functional management of  public lights due to street lighting control systems.

DA: automatic flow regulation
street lighting control systems

DA is an automatic luminous flux regulation system. The system works in this way: an automatic profile is set that allows you to take advantage of the maximum light intensity in the first and last hours of the system being switched on, reducing the level of light intensity in the central hours of the night. More precisely, from switching on until midnight the luminous flux works at 100% and then drops by 30% until 6.00 in the morning. From then on, the luminous flux will start to rise to reach 100% again.

DAC: custom adjustment

The DAC flux regulation system follows the same principle as the DA option with the only difference that it is customizable, this means that it is possible to vary the maximum and minimum management times of the luminous flux depending on the needs of the system and in concomitance with regional laws.

D10: 1-10V analog control

The D10 street lighting control system allows the regulation of the luminaires by means of an analog voltage signal between 1V and 10V. 1V corresponds to the minimum brightness level and 10V corresponds to the maximum brightness level.

DALI: regulation via digital interface

DALI is the standard digital technology for managing luminaires based on a digital signal capable of uniquely addressing up to 64 devices on the same bus. The device is designed for the connection of 1 4/5 pole multipolar cable (L-N-DALI-PE). DALI mode always has the highest priority. The LED power supply switches to the DALI operating mode as soon as a valid DALI command is received. The DALI mode remains active until the next shutdown.

DB: flux regulation with pilot cable

The DB system allows a simple and synchronized flow regulation. The device is supplied with a bi-power driver which, depending on the presence or absence of voltage on an additional conductor (pilot cable), establishes an operating regime at full or reduced power.

DR: flux regulator
street lighting control systems

In LED retrofit installations there may be a flux regulator for discharge lamps. With this option, the LED fixture follows the voltage regulation carried out in the system, thereby varying the power supply current of the LEDs. It is thus possible to combine HID luminaires with LED luminaires in the same system by exploiting existing energy-saving systems. Operation is guaranteed only in the presence of amplitude modulation regulators and not on phase partialization (cutoff).

Optimizing costs is simple

Light is today one of the major sources of electrical consumption. With AEC’s street lighting control systems, it is possible to optimize lighting, favouring considerable energy savings.

The street lighting remote control nodes

Everything we have seen so far concerned the options for dimming the luminous flux via the power supply. When, on the other hand, you want to make the fixtures intelligent by making them communicate with each other, then, in that case, it is necessary to equip them with additional devices, that is the nodes for remote control. With these it is possible to create a communication infrastructure, giving life to smart lighting control systems.
