Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardized document that provides transparent, guaranteed and comparable information on the environmental impact of a product during its life cycle.

What are EPD certifications?

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are transparent and standardized communication tools that provide detailed information on the environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle. Written according to ISO 14025 and PCR (Product Category Rules), EPDs allow manufacturers to disclose the environmental performance of their products in a verifiable and comparable way, allowing companies, consumers and designers to make informed choices.

Why choose EPD certified products

Verified Information

EPDs are drafted according to international standards such as ISO 14025, ensuring reliable and comparable data.

Reducing Environmental Impact

Through detailed knowledge of the product life cycle, it is possible to identify areas of improvement to reduce emissions and waste.

Competitiveness

Companies that choose EPD certified products demonstrate their commitment to sustainability, improving their reputation and competitiveness on the market.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

The environmental impacts included in the EPD certification are based on a “Life Cycle Assessment”, a structured and scientific analysis methodology used to evaluate the environmental impacts associated with all phases of the life cycle of a product, process or service.

How to get certified

Once the LCA study of the product is completed, the EPD document is drawn up, following the indications imposed by the international reference regulations. A verification process is then followed by a third-party body that will guarantee the transparency and truthfulness of the results obtained.

AEC ensures transparency at every step

All our product EPDs are of the “Cradle to Grave” type and analyse the environmental impacts for each phase of the product’s life, from the extraction of raw materials (A1) to final waste management (C4), including the benefits generated by the reuse and recovery of components.

Results obtained using certified tools

Analysis with certified tools

The results present in our EPDs are obtained through a proprietary LCA-Tool, verified and certified by a third party. This tool will also allow us to perform LCA studies of products in the development phase as well as the possibility of experimenting with substitutions of raw materials/components within the same device and having direct feedback on the variation in environmental impact performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an LCA-Tool?

An LCA-Tool is a calculation algorithm that allows to make the development of an LCA study more efficient, fast and accurate, since they simplify the management of large amounts of data and allow to obtain results based on international standards. The algorithm created by AEC Illuminazione is based on a representative collection of its products and therefore allows to adapt and return LCA studies for specific configurations of its lighting fixtures.

What standards are LCAs based on?

The construction of an LCA study is based on the use of the following standards: ISO 14040:2006. Principles and framework of the LCA study. This standard provides the general structure for the realization of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). It does not go into technical details, but establishes the main phases and basic principles. ISO 14044:2006. Requirements and guidelines for conducting an LCA. This standard provides technical and methodological details for applying the ISO 14040 framework in a practical way. It is the operational standard for performing an LCA.

What standards are EPDs based on?

How should environmental impact indicator tables be read?

Within the environmental impact tables, the indicators are reported using scientific notation, in order to be able to represent each value in the same way and avoiding numbers with many decimals. The numbers are always presented in exponential notation E+n, where E multiplies the previous number by 10 to the nth exponent. Examples: 1.04E+01 —-> 10.4 | 1.04E+03 —-> 1040 | 1.04E-01 —-> 0.104

What does Cradle to Gate and Cradle to Grave mean?

These are terms used within the regulations for the construction of EPDs and LCA studies. The term Cradle to Gate refers to the first three phases of the product life cycle (A1-A3) and includes the extraction of raw materials (A1), transport to the factory (A2) and production (A3). Cradle to Grave instead, analyses all the phases of the product life cycle, from the extraction of raw materials (A1) to the final waste management (C4).

What is the GWP (Global Warming Potential) indicator?

The GWP (Global Warming Potential) indicator measures the global warming potential of a product or process, expressed in kg of CO₂ equivalent (kg CO₂-eq). This indicator evaluates the impact of greenhouse gas emissions (such as CO₂, CH₄, N₂O) on the Earth’s temperature over a given time horizon and is used to compare the climate effects of different emissions and to quantify the carbon footprint of a product throughout its life cycle.
